ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision to East Tennessee State University Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 11-10 on the season, while East Tennessee State is now 10-10.
The Bucs took the early lead in the top of the 1st when Hagen Owenby singled to left field scoring Jeremy Taylor, who reached on a hit by pitch earlier in the inning.
ETSU added two more runs in the 3rd inning when Owenby hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly and Trey York scored on wild pitch.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th when Roger Gonzalez doubled and came home on Mark Lowrie's single to right field.
The Bucs tallied three runs in the 5th on four hits to grab a commanding 6-1 lead. ETSU extended the lead to 7-1 in the 6th when Taylor doubled to score Robby McCabe.
Winthrop answered with a run of its own in their half of the 6th on an RBI single by Gonzalez that scored Mitch Spires. The Eagles rallied for three more runs in the 8th before falling short by the final score of 7-5.
ETSU's Jamin McCann (2-0) picked up the win, working five innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts. Winthrop's Riley Arnone (2-1) took the loss, going three innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
Winthrop begins Big South Conference play this Thursday, March 24 with a three-game series at High Point University. Game times are 6 p.m. Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
