DeLAND, FL—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team fell to Stetson University 5-4 in the decisive Game 3 of the series on Sunday afternoon when the Hatters hit a walk off base hit in the ninth inning to claim the final game of the weekend series.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 11-9 on the season, while Stetson is now 12-9.
The Eagles took the early lead in the top of the 2nd when Grant English grounded into a double play sending Babe Thomas home after reaching on a single earlier in the inning.
Winthrop added two more runs in the 3rd for the 3-0 lead. Tyler Asbill led the inning off with a double to right center. Anthony Paulsen later singled to center field scoring Asbill. Roger Gonzalez singled up the middle to score Paulsen.
Stetson scored in the bottom of the 5th when Austin Hale singled scoring Charlie Watters.
The Eagles scored their final run of the afternoon in the top of the 6th when Jace Whitley scored on a throwing error after doubling to left field.
The Hatters' Cory Reid cut the lead to 4-2 when he hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th.
Stetson's Hale doubled down the left field line scoring Colton Lightner to once again cut into the Eagles' lead in the bottom of the 7th.
The Hatters rallied in the bottom of the 9th with two runs and three hits. Matt Morales flied out to left field but Dean Garabedian was able to get home for the walk-off 5-4 win.
Winthrop starter Thad Harris pitched a full eight innings allowing three runs while compiling seven strikeouts along the way. Zach Cook received the loss and is now 0-2 on the season.
Winthrop will look to respond from this loss when they host East Tennessee State this Tuesday, Mar. 22 at the Winthrop Ballpark.
