Winthrop Holds Off Stetson 6-4 in Game 2 of Series Saturday Afternoon

DeLand, FL—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad responded from Friday's loss with a 6-4 victory over Stetson University Saturday at Melching Field.

With the win, Winthrop is now 11-8 on the season, while Stetson falls to 11-9.

Just like Friday's matchup, it was another pitchers' duel until Winthrop opened up the scoring with two runs in the top of the 4th.  Jace Whitley singled up the middle scoring Mark Lowrie, who had singled earlier in the inning, and Babe Thomas who had reached base on an error.

After Mitch Spires singled up the middle, Roger Gonzalez did the same, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Whitley led off the 6th inning with a double down the right field line.  Jake Sullivan drew a walk. Tyler Asbill then doubled down the right field line scoring Whitley.  Spires singled to right center the following at bat advancing both Asbill and Sullivan home for the 6-0 lead.

Stetson was able to avoid the shutout by scoring a run in the bottom of the 6th when John Fussel's hit scored Vance Vizcaino.

The Hatters continued to cut into the Eagles' lead when they added another run in the bottom of the 8th on a Charlie Watters single, scoring Kirk Sidwell.

Stetson added two runs in the bottom of the 9th but the Eagles' defense and bullpen held strong for the 6-4 victory.

The Eagles connected for 15 hits and only committed one error on the afternoon.

Winthrop starter Zach Sightler picked up the win and is now 3-0 on the season.  Sightler pitched 6.2 innings only allowing one run and compiled two strikeouts along the way.

Winthrop will look to carry this momentum over in a decisive Game 3 tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 19.  First pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 1 pm.
