DeLand, FL—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad dropped Game 1 of the weekend series 2-1 in a pitchers' duel against Stetson University Friday night at Melching Field.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 10-8 on the season, while Stetson improves to 11-8.
The Eagles gave up the early lead in the 1
st inning when Kirk Sidwell flied out to right field, scoring Matt Morales.
Winthrop evened the score at 1-1 when
Babe Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to right field of his own, scoring
Anthony Paulsen.
The Hatters regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of 5
th when Vance Vizcaino singled to left field sending Charlie Watters home.
Neither team was able to produce any substantial offense the remainder of the game as the Hatters held off the Eagles and the game ended in a 2-1 final.

Sam Kmiec picked up his second loss of the season and now holds a 3-2 record. Kmiec went eight innings and produced six strikeouts along the way.
Winthrop will look to bounce back from this loss tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 19. First pitch of Game 2 has been moved ahead to noon (instead of original scheduled time of 2 p.m.).
