DeLand, FL—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad dropped Game 1 of the weekend series 2-1 in a pitchers' duel against Stetson University Friday night at Melching Field.

With the loss, Winthrop is now 10-8 on the season, while Stetson improves to 11-8.

The Eagles gave up the early lead in the 1st inning when Kirk Sidwell flied out to right field, scoring Matt Morales.

Winthrop evened the score at 1-1 when Babe Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to right field of his own, scoring Anthony Paulsen.

The Hatters regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of 5th when Vance Vizcaino singled to left field sending Charlie Watters home.

Neither team was able to produce any substantial offense the remainder of the game as the Hatters held off the Eagles and the game ended in a 2-1 final.
