GREENSBORO, NC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team downed the NC A&T Aggies 15-4 at War Memorial Stadium Wednesday night in their second highest scoring game of the season.
The Eagles were propelled by another stellar offensive performance with a season high 18 hits on the night.
Mark Lowrie was 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs extending his hitting streak to 11 straight games and he has now reached base in 16 straight contests.
Mitch Spires went 3 for 5 and lengthened his hitting streak to 12 straight games.
Roger Gonzalez was 3 for 3 connecting with a three run homer.
With the win, Winthrop is now to 10-7 on the year while NC A&T falls to 4-14.
Winthrop seized the early lead when Gonzalez hit a three run homer in the top of the 1
st.
The Eagles stretched the gap to 5-0 in the 3
rd when
Babe Thomas doubled to right center scoring Gonzalez, followed by a Lowrie single to score Thomas.
The Aggies put one on the board off of a Kyle Clary single to center field in the bottom of the 4
th.
Winthrop added three more runs in the 5
th. Thomas hit his second RBI of the afternoon when he hit a sacrifice fly scoring Spires. Lowrie doubled scoring
Anthony Paulsen. This was followed by a
Jace Whitley single advancing Lowrie for the score.
The Eagles exploded for five runs in the 6
th all coming on two outs. They had three hits and took advantage of a wild pitch, passed ball, and hit batter.
NC A&T added one more run in the 7
th and then the Eagles added two more in the 8
th for a 15-4 final.
Winthrop starting pitcher
Riley Arnone went three innings only allowing two hits and tallied five strikeouts. He received the win and is now 2-0 on the season.
Winthrop will continue their road stretch when they travel to face Stetson University in a three game weekend series. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 18 beginning 6:30 p.m. at Melching Field in DeLand, Florida.
