Lacrosse Heads to Bucknell For Wednesday Contest Against Bison

ROCK HILL, SC – Four straight road games start Wednesday for the Winthrop lacrosse team as it heads to Lewisburg, PA for a 2 p.m. contest against the Bucknell Bison.

The Eagles will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season as their record currently stands at 8-1.

Saturday Winthrop played its second doubleheader of the season.  In the early game the Eagles took down Army 13-5 behind four goals from Kristen Shriver and a strong team defensive effort.

In the late game against Bryant, the Eagles built a 10-4 lead at the half but tired legs started to show in the second as the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the lead.  The game went to overtime and Bryant was able to put one in the back of the net with only 14 seconds left in the first overtime period for the 13-12 win.

Winthrop is scoring an average of 13 goals per game while allowing only 6.78.  The Eagles continue to be very strong defensively, forcing better than 13 turnovers per contest.

Bucknell, who has a long history of women's lacrosse, dating back to 1978, will meet Winthrop for only the second time.  The Eagles downed the Bison 19-9 in Rock Hill last season.

Bucknell sports a 5-2 record this season and is coming off a low-scoring contest against Wagner where the Bison came away with a 6-5 victory Monday.

The Bison have been a high-scoring offense this season, averaging 15.14 goals per contest.  Eve Lukowski and Christina Manis have led Bucknell offensively with 36 and 28 points respectively.  Lukowski has scored 19 goals and assisted on 17 others while Manis has scored 11 times with 17 assists.  Bucknell has allowed only nine goals per contest this year and Jamie DeWitt has seen the majority of playing time in the net for the Bison.  She has an 8.64 goals-against average and a .465 save percentage.

Following Wednesday's contest the Eagles will hit the field again on Saturday at UMBC for a noon contest.
