Softball Falls To North Florida, South Florida On Day 2 Of Under Armour Showcase

CLEARWATER, FL— Winthrop softball dropped both its games on day two of the Under Armour Showcase as it dropped a heartbreaker in the first game of the day in a 9-8 loss to North Florida before falling 8-0 to South Florida, Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles are now 10-15 on the year and wrap up the weekend action on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. against Central Michigan.

The day started off with the one-run loss to the Ospreys was the Eagles trailed 2-0 early on before scoring eight unanswered.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, Winthrop got one back in the bottom half and took an 8-0 lead with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Zharne Glover provided a two-run double, Paige Haley had an RBI double and Leah Young topped off the inning with a two-run home run for her seventh of the season.

Winthrop was in control until UNF scored seven runs in the final two innings, including three in the top of the seventh. The inning started off with an error and UNF made the Eagles pay as the next batter doubled and then the first two batters scored on a triple to center by Alex Arciola. The go-ahead and eventual game-winning run came on a single to left that scored Arciola from third.

Four pitchers saw action in the game for the Eagles as Kiley Majette tossed the most innings with four as she allowed four runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Chace Helms took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in one inning.

In the second game of the day the Eagles fell 8-0 to South Florida in five innings and just couldn't seem to get timely hitting as they had six hits and stranded seven batters. Meanwhile USF found a way to get runs across the plate as it posted at least one run in each of the five innings.

Helms started the game in the circle for the Eagles as she tossed 3.0 innings allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout as she's now 0-4 on the year. Her counterpart Erica Nunn scattered six hits over five innings with a walk and six strikeouts to improve to 8-5.

Young reached base in both games as she extends her career-best streak of consecutive games reaching base to 15 as she finished with four hits on the day. Lowers had three hits on the day and has now hit safely in six straight games, one shy of her personal best this season. Haley and Tara Loken also had three hits on the day.
