CLEARWATER, FL— Winthrop softball suffered a 3-1 loss to Central Michigan on the final day of the Under Armour Showcase.
The Eagles are now 10-16 on the year as they will head toward the northern part of the state of Florida to take on the nation's top-ranked team, the Florida Gators on Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 6 p.m. Central Michigan improves to 10-11 overall with the win.
Paige Haley gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as she singled home
Zharne Glover, who led the inning off with a walk.
Central Michigan immediately tied the game in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a fielding miscue by the Eagles. After a leadoff walk, an error by starting pitcher
Kiley Majette put runners at first and third with no outs. It looked like Majette might get out of the jam after a runner was thrown out trying to steal second and she got the catcher Maison Kalina to fly out to center but Sara Hansen came through with the two-out single to left that scored Allison Curtis.
Tara Loken doubled to lead off the fourth, but was stranded as
Morgan Lowers hit the ball hard to end the inning with a lineout to center.
Kalina came through for the Chippewas in the 5
th as her one-out RBI double put them on top 2-1. Kalina did it again in the seventh when she added some insurance with an RBI single with two outs.
Like they've done all season, the Eagles did not go down without a fight. With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the seventh,
Leah Young was hit-by-a-pitch and then pinch-hitter
Keleigh Romine singled up the middle to put the go-ahead run at the plate. However, Hannah Warren was able to get
Shayna Covington to pop out for the final out. Winthrop ended up stranding 10 runners in the game.
Majette took the loss after tossing a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) with two walks and four strikeouts. Warren also tossed a complete game allowing the one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Young didn't get a hit in the game, but reached base twice after getting hit and has now reached in 16 consecutive games. That is tied for the 10
th best streak in a single-season (stat kept since 2006).
Megan Winningham finished with two hits on the day and now has 15 hits in her 16 games played this season.
