ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad split their doubleheader against Miami (OH) Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.
With each team taking one game, Winthrop is now to 9-7 on the year while Miami stands at 6-7.
GAME 1Winthrop defeated Miami (OH) 7-5 in the first game of the doubleheader. Early offense helped the Eagles achieve this victory as they scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings.
The Eagles struck first scoring a run on a fielder's choice ground ball from
Anthony Paulsen advancing
Tyler Asbill home for the 1-0 lead.
Winthrop tacked on five more runs in the 2
nd inning on two hits and one Miami error. Paulsen connected for his third RBI on the afternoon to help fuel the offensive outburst.
The Eagles added another run in the 3
rd when Asbill singled to right field sending
Grant English home for the 7-0 lead.
The RedHawks finally got on the board in the top of the 7
th when Chad Sedio hit a two run homer to right field, his third home run of the series. Miami added another score when Julian Flanary hit a single to right field scoring Adam Yacek.
Miami connected for their second long ball of the afternoon when Tyler Harris hit a home run over the left field wall cutting Winthrop's lead to 7-4 in the top of the 8
th.
The RedHawks added one more run in the top of the 9
th.
Winthrop's defense and bullpen held strong to help secure the 7-5 victory. Right hander
Zach Sightler picked up the win and is now 2-0 on the season. He pitched 7.2 innings and compiled four strikeouts while only walking two batters.
Zach Cook earned his first save of the season pitching 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
GAME 2The second half of the doubleheader was a pitchers' duel for the most part, and was scoreless through 7.2 innings. The RedHawks won 5-1 in 10 innings.
Miami struck first with a Gary Russo single to left field scoring Harris in the top of the 8
th inning.
The Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the 9
th when
Roger Gonzalez advanced home on a wild pitch.
The RedHawks regained the lead in the top of the 10
th when Ross Haffey doubled to deep center. Dallas Hall drove Haffey in with the following at bat. Flanary hit a two run RBI to stretch the Miami lead to 5-1 heading in to the bottom of the 10
th.
Winthrop failed to overcome the four run deficit in its last at bat and dropped a 5-1 decision.
The Eagles' starting pitcher
Thad Harris received a no decision in this contest. However, he only allowed one run through 7.1 innings pitched, striking out five batters and only walking one. Right handed reliever
Nate Pawelczyk received the loss and is 0-1 on the season.
Winthrop will look to improve its road record when the Eagles travel to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies this Wednesday, Mar. 16 at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, NC beginning at 6:00 pm.
