Yeager's Five Goals Propels Eagles to 13-6 Season-Opening Victory Over Jacksonville Friday

JACKSONVILLE, FLAllie Yeager scored five goals and Alaina Girani recorded 10 saves Friday as the Winthrop lacrosse team cruised to a 13-6 season-opening victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins.

Winthrop (1-0) jumped out to a four-goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest behind two goals from Shannon Gallagher and a goal each from Katie Clark and Yeager. 

The Dolphins (0-3) pulled one goal back before freshman Alexis Linhardt grabbed her first-career goal followed by Yeager netting her second to go up 6-1.  Jacksonville scored with two seconds left in the half to trail 6-2 at the break.

Jacksonville grabbed the first two goals of the second half, pulling within two at 6-4 with 26:54 left in the contest.  Winthrop then scored five of the next six goals as Yeager continued her offensive explosion.  She scored two goals in 17 seconds to put the Eagles up 8-4 with 22:27 on the clock. 

Kristen Shriver put the Eagles up 9-4 before Jacksonville scored its fifth of the game.  Yeager scored her fifth followed by a goal from Logan McCarthy giving Winthrop an 11-5 advantage.  Jacksonville scored its final goal of the contest with 15:40 on the clock.  Shriver scored again less than a minute later and freshman Kienan Linhardt scored with 20 seconds left in the contest, giving the Eagles the 13-6 victory.

"The kids executed the gameplan perfectly this afternoon," head coach John Sung said.  "The team should be very proud of this performance and it's a great start to the season."

Yeager netted her five goals on six shots while Gallagher finished with two goals, two assists and three ground balls.  Senior Abigail Blevins led the team with three assists.  Sophomore goalie Alaina Girani finished with 10 saves in the victory.

Winthrop finished with 25 total shots with 19 being on goal.  The Eagles went 2-for-5 on free-position attempts and won the draw control battle 12-8.  Jacksonville was strong on the loose balls, picking up 24 ground balls to Winthrop's 14.

The Eagles return to the field on Sunday in their home opener against the Furman Paladins at 1p .m. at Eagle Field.
