ROCK HILL, SC – Logan McCarthy and Shannon Gallagher each tallied four goals Sunday as the Winthrop lacrosse team scored a 15-5 victory over the Furman Paladins, improving to 2-0 for the first time in program history.
McCarthy netted her four goals on five shots, going 2-for-2 on free-position attempts and also added one assist. Gallagher was perfect, scoring four goals on four shots. Abigail Blevins and Katie Clark each added two goals. Hayley Krause led the team with six draw controls while Katherine Judge grabbed five and picked up three ground balls. Alaina Girani allowed only three goals and made seven saves.
"We had a very balanced offense today, not allowing the defense to key on any one person," head coach John Sung said. "Our clearing was exceptional today which I thought was really a big key to this victory."
Winthrop got off to a strong start behind two goals from Gallagher and one tally from Clark giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the first half. After Furman got on the board with 15:24 on the clock, Blevins tallied her first less than a minute later to put Winthrop back up 4-1.
Furman's (0-2) Meg Lingo netted two goals in a span of only 15 seconds to pull the Paladins with one at 4-3 with 9:25 on the clock. The Eagles were able to close the half on a strong note, scoring four unanswered goals. Gallagher grabbed her third while Clark scored her second. Krista Frowein put one in the back of the net and McCarthy capped off the half with a free-position goal with 1:22 remaining as the Eagles took an 8-3 lead into the break.
After a slow start to the second half, the Eagles were able to tally the first four goals of the second half. McCarthy, Gallagher, Kienan Linhardt and Danielle Ellis each grabbed a goal. Furman scored one of its two goals with 6:06 remaining before McCarthy and Blevins both scored a goal to put the Eagles up 14-4. The Paladins added another with 57 seconds left and McCarthy again ended a half well, scoring with 16 seconds left on a feed from Kristen Shriver.
Winthrop dominated the shot totals, out-shooting Furman 34-18. The Eagles were also very strong on the draw circle, picking up 15 of 21 draw controls. Winthrop was also perfect on clear attempts, converting all 15.
The Eagles will remain at home for their next contest on Friday, February 26 against Cincinnati at 2 p.m.
