ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop softball will face Humber College in its home opener with a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. on Terry Field.
The Eagles are off to a slow start this season with an 0-4 mark and hope to get back on track at home, where they are 34-16 over the past two seasons.
Winthrop faces a Humber College team that is on a U.S. Tour and Winthrop is one of its five stops in the state of South Carolina. Humber College is located in Toronto, Ontario. The Hawks are coming off a 15-11 loss at Columbia College on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
The Eagles are 3-2 in their last five home openers, having won the last two and eight of the last 11.
Senior
Dallas King will likely get a start in one of the games in the circle. Either one of the freshmen pitchers in
Keleigh Romine or
Kiley Majette could start as well.
The Eagles are led by juniors
Paige Haley and
Leah Young, who are coming off career years at the plate. Haley returns the highest batting average from a year ago at .286 while she also set career-highs in runs, hits, doubles and RBI. Young batted .265 in 2015 and set career-highs with 30 runs, 41 hits, four doubles, five triples, three home runs, 26 RBI and 18 stolen bases.
