Kilpatrick Leads Eagles To A 52-43 Big South Win Over Coastal Carolina

Eagles Snap Four-Game Skid With Strong Defensive Effort

ROCK HILL SC-Aliyah Kilpatrick scored a game-high 21 points and CiiCii Buford added a career-best 12 points to lead Winthrop's women to a 52-43 Big South Conference win on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Winthrop (4-19, 3-11) and moves the Eagles into a tie with Coastal Carolina (8-15, 3-11) in the conference standings. Winthrop has now won six of its last seven meetings against the Chanticleers.

Winthrop outscored Coastal 14-7 in the fourth quarter after Naima Jackson had given the Eagles a 38-36 lead with a buzzer-beater from 30 feet to end the third period. Kilpatrick scored eight of Winthrop's 14 fourth quarter points with the biggest basket coming with 2:07 left in the game when she picked the pocket of a Coastal player and drove the length of the court for a layup to give her team an insurmountable lead at 50-42.

"I am very proud of this team. They have fought hard and they've been through a lot of adversity, but they've never stopped working hard," said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook after the game. "I thought we had two good practices this week and everybody contributed. I thought the shot Naima hit at the end of the third quarter gave us the energy to finish the game."

Winthrop's defense held Coastal to 30.5 percent shooting from the floor (18 of 59), while the Eagles were just a bit better at 32 percent (18 of 56). The difference turned out to be from the free throw line where Winthrop attempted 16 more free throws and made eight more than Coastal.

After falling behind 7-0 in the opening two minutes of the game, Winthrop outscored the Chanticleers 11-4 for the remainder of the first quarter. Coastal regained a five-point lead at 17-12 with 7:29 left in the first half following 3-pointers by Jas Adams and Ced Gibson, but Winthrop bounced back with an 11-2 lead to go up 23-19. Buford connected on one of her career-high three 3-pointers to put the Eagles ahead 21-19 with 4:30 left in the quarter.

After taking a 23-22 halftime lead, Winthrop came out of the locker room to score the first six points of the third quarter to go ahead by seven after Nuba Jackson's 17-foot baseline jumper made it 29-22 with 7:20 left in the period. Coastal battled back by outscoring Winthrop 14-6 over the next 7:12 and took a brief lead at 36-35 on a layup by Nicole Isaacs with eight seconds left. Winthrop got the ball to Naima Jackson who dribbled down the right sideline and beat the buzzer with give the Eagles a two-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Winthrop went up by six in the opening 48 seconds of the final quarter after a follow shot by Naima Jackson following an offensive rebound and a jumper by Kilpatrick. A layup by Kilpatrick with 4:49 remaining pushed the lead to nine at 47-38 and Coastal never got any closer than six points the rest of the way.

The Eagles will return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Buies Creek, NC, to face Campbell at 5:30 p.m.
