Early Winthrop Turnovers Lead To A 69-56 Loss At Campbell

BUIES CREEK, NC—Winthrop's women fell behind early to Campbell due to turnovers and the hot-shooting Camels downed the Eagles 69-56 Tuesday evening at Gore Arena.

The loss drops Winthrop to 4-20 overall and 3-12 in Big South play while Campbell improves to 10-14 and 5-10.

After Aliyah Kilpatrick gave Winthrop its only lead of the game with a quick 3-pointer, Campbell went on a 13-0 run and was never seriously threatened as it led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.

"Points off turnovers was the key stat of the game," said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook. "We should have been ready for their pressure, but by the time we were able to handle it, it was too late. We also missed 10 free throws and we can't do that."

Winthrop committed seven turnovers in the first quarter that helped Campbell take the 13-3 lead.  After Kilpatrick's trey just 26 seconds into the game, Winthrop did not score again until 2:12 was left in the period when Arianne Whitaker made a 10-footer in the lane to spur a 6-0 Eagle run in just over a minute.  The Eagles managed to cut the deficit to four points at 15-11 after the first quarter on a layup by Kayla Atkins.

Campbell quickly up the lead to double digits in the first four minutes of the second quarter as it took a 26-15 lead on a layup by Tiffany Daniel.  The Camels went ahead 39-24 on a three-pointer by Summer Price, the game's leading scorer with 18 points, and led 41-29 at halftime.

Campbell connected on 62 percent from the floor in the first half (18 of 29) and out-scored Winthrop 15-4 on points off turnovers and 26-6 on points in the paint.

Winthrop got it back to eight points three times early in the third quarter as Naima Jackson and Kilpatrick scored four points each.  Kilpatrick's two free throws with 7:05 left in the quarter made it a 45-37 game.  Amanda Cofer responded for Campbell by scoring six straight points to give her team a 52-39 lead just under the five-minute mark.  A follow shot by Atkins drew the Eagles to within nine points at 52-43 with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter, but Campbell closed out the period on a 6-1 run to go ahead 58-44.

Campbell led by 18 twice in the fourth quarter before clearing its bench.  Twelve different Camels got into the scoring column.

Kilpatrick led Winthrop with 14 points while Naima Jackson scored 13 as did CiiCii Buford, who had a new career high.  In addition to Price's 18 points, Cofer finished with 13 points and Jessica Pone added 11, all in the first half, for the Camels.

Atkins led Winthrop on the boards with a career-high 11 as the Camels narrowly won the battle of the boards, 38-37.

Winthrop will return to action on Saturday when it travels to High Point for a 2 p.m. Big South game.
