Softball Falls To Elon, #12/13 Georgia Saturday Afternoon At Red & Black Showcase

ATHENS, GA—Winthrop softball dropped both of its games on day two of the Red & Black Showcase with losses to Elon and 12th-ranked Georgia on Saturday.

Winthrop falls to 0-3 on the year and will wrap-up the weekend on Sunday against Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles opened the day with a 17-3 loss to Elon as the Phoenix posted six runs in the third and fifth innings. Senior Dallas King suffered the loss in the circle after allowing nine runs (five earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Winthrop got on the scoreboard in the third inning when K.J. Uyeno had a two-RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded as Shayna Covington and Blake Wallert scored. It was the first career run for Wallert. The third run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Wallert drove in her first collegiate run with an RBI groundout with runners at the corners, scoring Zharne Glover.

Elon totaled 15 hits, four of them going for extra bases as 11 different players got hits and 10 drove in a run. The Eagles left four runners stranded in the game. Kayla Caruso and Kiandra Mitchum combined to hold the Eagles to two hits with just one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the second game of the day the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Bulldogs in the top of the second. Uyeno led off the inning with a walk and then Wallert reached on a fielder's choice as Georgia's catcher Katie Browne's throwing error to second allowed Uyeno and Wallert to remain safe on the bases. With one out, Glover advanced the runners on a ground out and then scored on another throwing error by Browne.

Georgia responded immediately in the bottom of the second with five runs, highlighted by Alex Hugo's grand slam. Georgia added five more runs in the third and eight in the fourth on its way to an 18-3 win.

The Eagles cut it to a 5-3 game in the top of the third when Paige Haley scored on an illegal pitch. Haley walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on an error and then moved to third on a ground out.
