ATHENS, GA—Winthrop softball opened up the 2016 season Friday afternoon at the 9
th annual Black & Red Showcase with a 15-0 loss to Elon.
"We didn't give them but one or two runs, they absolutely hit the ball," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "We just didn't compete like we should have today. They just hit the ball and there was nothing we could do."
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 early on and just never seemed to slow down the Phoenix. A two-run triple by Kara Shutt put Elon up 2-0 and then her two-run single highlighted a six-run second inning by the Phoenix. Alaina Hall drove in five runs over the course of the third and fourth innings as her three-run home run in the top of the fourth made it 15-0 as all three runs were unearned.
Freshman
Kiley Majette started the game in the circle for Winthrop as she allowed five earned runs on four hits with three walks in an inning. Elon's Elise Walton tossed four innings allowing just two hits and striking out three to earn the win.
Sophomore
K.J. Uyeno and freshman
Morgan Lowers picked up hits for the Eagles as Uyeno picked up her fourth career double. Lowers also doubled for her first collegiate hit as it came with two outs in the top of the third. The hit was Uyeno's 20
th in her 38
th career start.
Winthrop will look to bounce back on Saturday when it faces the same Elon squad at 10 a.m. and then #13/14 Georgia at 12:30 p.m.
