ROCK HILL, SC—Akron used a balanced scoring attack led by Megan Sefcik's 19 points to down the Winthrop women's team 80-59 Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The loss was the eighth straight for the Eagles who are now 1-8 on the season while Akron improves to 3-2 and improves its all-time record against Winthrop to 3-0.
Winthrop was led by freshman guard
Danyael Goodhope who came off the bench to score 14 points to equal her season high. Senior
Erica Williams was the only other Eagle in double figures with 10.
All 14 players on Akron's roster got into the scoring column as the hot-shooting Lady Zips connected on 48 percent from the floor (30-62) and made 10 of 27 three-point field goals compared to only one of 14 for Winthrop. Sefcik was 5 of 9 from behind the arc and was one of five Zips who connected on 3-pointers. Overall, the Eagles shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the floor.
After trailing by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter at 67-35 with 8:26 left to play, Winthrop made its best run of the night by outscoring Akron 20-7 over a six-minute stretch to close the gap to 19 points at 74-55 thanks to six points from freshman
Marissa Cantrell and eight by Goodhope.
The early turnovers by Winthrop and second chance points by Akron helped the Zips build its huge lead. At one point in the second half, Akron had outscored the Eagles 22-4 on points off turnovers and had a 16-6 advantage on second chance points off offensive rebounds.
Winthrop led just twice in the game. The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening seconds on a layup by
CiiCii Buford, but Akron responded with seven unanswered points to take a five-point lead. The Eagles then outscored the Lady Zips 8-2 to take its last lead of the day at 10-9 when
Teylahna Green connected on a 15-foot jumper with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.
Akron then took command of the game thanks to Megan Sefcik who came off the bench to score eight straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Zips a 21-12 lead after the opening period.
The lead ballooned to 18 points when Akron opened the second quarter on a 15-6 run as seven different players scored in the first 7:30 of the period. Winthrop cut the deficit to 13 at 36-23 at halftime after
Angela Coello Perez scored the final five points of the first half on a layup and the Eagles' only 3-pointer of the day from the left corner.
Winthrop will take a week off during final exam week before playing an exhibition game on Saturday, Dec. 10, at home against USC Aiken at 7 p.m.
