Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles Overwhelmed by No. 3 Baylor's NCAA Record-Setting Performance

WACO, TX—The Baylor Lady Bears showed why they rank among the elite women's basketball programs in the nation as they set a NCAA record for margin of victory in a 140-32 win over Winthrop on Tuesday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor opened the game on a 21-0 run and the only question from that point was how large the final margin would be.  The Lady Bears are now 11-1 on the season with that one loss at top-ranked UConn. Winthrop lost for the ninth straight game and falls to 1-9.

Baylor has now surpassed the century mark in five of its 12 games and set several school records in its win over the Eagles. The 108-point victory margin broke the previous NCAA Div. I record of 101 held by Louisiana Tech in a 126-25 win over Texas-Pan American in 1989.

The 140 points by Baylor established a new school record, and are the most points ever scored against Winthrop.  Baylor's previous high of 130 points was set against Kentucky in a 4-overtime loss in 2013. The most points allowed by Winthrop came on Dec. 30, 1990 in a 124-47 loss to Georgia Tech.

Winthrop connected on just 14 percent from the floor (9-66) compared to 61 percent by Baylor (58-95), and were outrebounded 75-25.

Eagle senior Erica Williams led Winthrop in scoring as she exceeded her season average with 15 points. Freshman point guard Danyael Goodhope also reached double figures with 10 points as she was a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Baylor, which played without leading scorer Alexis Jones, had three players finish with more than 20 points.  Khadijah Cave came off the bench to score 25 points on 11 of 12 shooting while Lauren Cox and Alexis Prince finished with career-highs as both finished with 23 points.

Goodhope was the only Winthrop player who scored in the first quarter as Baylor led 38-6.  Goodhope had the only field goals for the Eagles in 12 team attempts and converted four free throws.

The Lady Bears continued to pour it on the young Eagles in the second quarter as the lead increased 59 points at intermission, 77-18.  The 77 points broke the school record of 64 points in a half and the 59-point margin also surpassed the previous halftime record of 43 points.

The lead was extended to 70 at 98-28 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter and Baylor hit the 100 mark just seconds later on a steal and length of the court drive for a layup by Lauren Cox.  Cox put her team up by 80 at 109-29 with another steal and layup with a minute to go in the third quarter.  The lead bloomed to 90 on a 3-pointer by Natalie Chou with 6:41 left in the game that made it 122-32.

Chou broke the school scoring record and gave Baylor a 100-point lead at 132-32 with another 3-pointer with 3:17 remaining in the game.

Winthrop returns to action on Sunday when the Eagles host the Mercer Lady Bears at 2 p.m.
