ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop women dropped their seventh straight game as the Eagles fell to Tennessee Tech Tuesday night 73-50 at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop's record is now 1-7 while Tennessee Tech goes to 2-5 and improves its all-time record against the Eagles to 5-0.
The Eagles had no answer for the inside attack of Treyvonna Brooks and Yaktavia Hickson and the outside shooting of Hannah Goolsby. That trio combined for 55 points as Brooks led all scorers with 22, followed by Hickson with 19 and Goolsby, 14. Asia Harper also reached double figures for the Golden Eagles with 10.
Winthrop placed three players in double figures. Freshman
Angela Coello Perez led the Eagles with 11 while senior
Erica Williams and sophomore
Noell Kellers finished with 10 points each. For Kellers, it was a career high.
Tennessee Tech scored 26 points off 24 Winthrop turnovers and outscored the Eagles 20-8 on second chance points as the Golden Eagles pulled down 17 offensive rebounds.
Tech took control of the first quarter thanks to the offensive rebounding of Treyonna Brooks, who scored eight of the Golden Eagles first 12 points to give her team an early eight point lead. Brooks scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the opening period to put TTU up 21-9.
Winthrop opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to get to within five points at 21-16. The closest the Eagles could get in the first half.
Teylahna Green connected on a jumper to open the second period and that was followed by
Angela Coello Perez' 3-pointer and a driving bank shot by Williams.
Goolsby knocked down a triple for Tech to stop Winthrop's run. The Eagles trailed by 10 at the 5:02 mark after another basket by Brooks. Williams scored on a layup and
CiiCii Buford connected on a baseline jumper to get the Eagles back to within six at 30-24, but TTU took a 33-24 lead at halftime.
Tech opened up a 12 point lead midway through the third quarter when Goolsby connected on one of her four 3-pointers to put her team up 39-27.
Noell Kellers then scored seven straight points, including back-to-back three pointers, to close the deficit to seven at 40-33, but that would be as close as Winthrop could get the remainder of the game.
Winthrop returns to action Saturday when it hosts Akron for a 1 p.m. game.
