ST. THOMAS, USVI—The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped a 71-41 decision to No. 25 Gonzaga on Saturday night as the Eagles suffered their third straight loss in the 2016 Paradise Jam.
Winthrop's record drops to 1-6 as the Eagles will return home on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to take on Tennessee Tech out of the Ohio Valley Conference. Gonzaga, which is now 2-0 all-time against Winthrop, improves to 4-2.
Erica Williams scored 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Winthrop. Gonzaga, which had four players in double figures, was led by its 6-3 center Jill Barta, who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bulldogs, who had dropped its first two games of the tournament to Michigan and Florida State just as Winthrop did, jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the opening one minute, 39 seconds before
Erica Williams got the Eagles first basket with 7:56 left in the first period.
The Bulldogs were ahead 10-3 with 3:30 left in the quarter before Williams and
Naima Jackson combined for six points to close to within two points at 11-9 with 1:23 remaining to force a Gonzaga timeout. The two-point deficit was as close as Winthrop could get the remainder of the night.
Gonzaga scored the final five points of the first quarter and outscored Winthrop 21-8 in the second period to take a 20-point lead at intermission.
The lead ballooned to 55-26 at the end of the third period and the Bulldogs extended its lead to 30 to begin the final period.
