ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer heads to Asheville, NC for its final road game of the regular season as it will face UNC Asheville Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a 2-1 double overtime loss to High Point on Wednesday as they look to end a six-game losing streak. Winthrop is 3-9-1 on the year and 0-5 in the Big South. Asheville is 4-11 overall and 3-2 in the Big South. The game will air on the Big South Network.
Winthrop lost to the Panthers in the 104
th minute when they were awarded a penalty and Chris Ramsell drove it home for the win. The Eagles trailed 1-0 in the 71
st minute, but leveled the match in the 78
th minute on
Rasmus Arousell's fifth goal of the season.
Arousell continues to lead the team in scoring as he now has 12 points and his five goals are tied for eighth in the league and he's tied for 10
th in points per game. It was Arousell's third goal in five league games and that ties him with five other players at 4
th in conference games only.
Kenneth Perkinson was solid in goal, making four saves and even guessed the right way on the High Point winning penalty shot.
Winthrop and Asheville meet for the 40
th time as the Eagles lead the all-time series 25-11-3. The two teams battled it out on Oct. 17 of last season with the Eagles prevailing 3-2 in overtime in Rock Hill. They met up again for the first round of the Big South Tournament as the Eagles won 3-0 are now 4-0-1 against the Bulldogs in the last five meetings. The Eagles are 9-7-1 all-time at Asheville and last won there on Sept. 29, 2012 (3-1).
Asheville is looking to get back on track as it has dropped three straight while being outscored 16-1 in that stretch. Prior to the losing streak, the Bulldogs had league wins at Liberty and over Gardner-Webb.
Zach Joens is one of the top forwards in the league and has a team-best 17 points (7g, 3a) in 13 games (10 starts). Chris Katt, one of the taller goalkeepers in the league at 6-5, has been the starter in net for most of the season as he's started 12-of-14 games played. His lone shutout of the season came against Gardner-Webb.
