Winthrop Women’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie with Charleston Southern

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team fought hard to earn its first Big South Conference victory of the season, but finished in a 1-1 tie against Charleston Southern on Thursday night at Eagle Field.

The Eagles are now 3-11-1 (0-6-1 BSC) while Charleston Southern goes to 6-8-1 (2-4-1 BSC). Winthrop goes on the road one last time on Saturday against Presbyterian College at 7 p.m.

In the 28th minute Charleston Southern Kelsey Fitzhugh scored from 10-yards out to put the Buccaneers on top. Winthrop's Emily Crick had a chance to tie the score when she beat the defender and went one on one with the CSU goalkeeper but her shot was too high.

Late in the second half freshman Keeley Leising had a chance to tie the score as she ripped a shot that hit the post. Seconds later in the 76th minute senior Macey Bosley made a pass to set up Leising for the game-tying goal, her fifth of the season.  The 20 minutes of overtime did not produce a game clinching goal.

Winthrop had 14 shots on the night with seven being on goal. Senior goalkeeper Caroline Duncan had three saves to give her 26 for the season.
