Men's Soccer Hosts High Point Wednesday Night

Live Stats / Live Video
ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop men's soccer will play three of its final four regular season games at home beginning with High Point on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

The match was originally scheduled for Oct. 8, but postponed until this Wednesday due to poor weather conditions. Winthrop enters the contest with a 3-8-1 mark overall and 0-4 record in the Big South. High Point has won three straight and sports an 8-3-2 record overall and is 2-1 in the league.

The Eagles are coming off a 2-0 loss at league-leading Radford on Saturday, Oct. 15. Radford grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute and added an insurance goal late to earn its first win over the Eagles since Nov. 3, 2012. Junior Rasmus Arousell tried to tie the match in the 67th minute when he had a shot from close range at an angle that was turned away by a kick save from Radford goalie Aitor Pouseu Blanco.

Arousell leads the Eagles offensively with 10 points (4g, 2a) while senior James Skonicki is second with six points (3 goals). Kenneth Perkinson continues to man the net as he's now started all 10 games he's appeared.

It is a rematch of the two schools that played for the 2015 Big South Conference championship, which ended in a scoreless draw. The Eagles prevailed in a penalty shootout 3-1 on their way to a sixth appearance in the NCAA College Cup.

This will mark the 25th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Panthers. Winthrop holds a 15-6-3 all-time mark against High Point, but is just 1-4-2 in the last seven meetings. The last two matchups have ended in a tie and the Panthers won their last visit to Eagle Field, 3-2 in double-overtime. In fact, the last three meetings have all gone to double-overtime, when there had only been one meeting prior that ever did (2001).

High Point has won three straight games since tying Elon at home, 1-1. The Panthers feature the league's top offense at 2.69 goals per game as they are coming off a 7-0 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday at home. It was a program record for goals against a Div. I opponent.

Siggi Benonysson leads the offense with 21 points (9g, 3a0 while Chris Ramsell has 18 points with seven goals and four assists. There are 14 different players on the roster that have netted at least one goal and six that have scored multiple goals.

Keegan Meyer has been strong in goal for the Panthers as he's 7-3-2 on the year with three shutouts and a 1.19 goals against average. The freshman has posted two of his three clean sheets in league play.
