ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team came up short on Saturday as it fell 2-1 to Gardner-Webb on Senior Day.
Nine seniors were honored before Saturday's game, but a valiant effort failed to give them a victory as Winthrop falls to 3-10 (0-5 BSC) this season while Gardner-Webb improves to 8-7-2 (5-2 BSC). The Eagles will go on the road next Wednesday to face UNC Ashville at 7 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Gardner-Webb took the lead in the 55th minute when Stina Kleppe scored on a shot from 18-yards out just past the diving Winthrop goalkeeper Karly Gustafson. The Eagles answered quickly when senior Anne Cushman delivered a corner kick and to freshman Natalie Royaards who headed the ball into the net to knot the score. GWU scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 73rd minute when Brandi Arey found the goal from eight yards out.
Winthrop's two goalkeeper, Gustafson and senior teammate Caroline Duncan, combined for six saves, while the Winthrop offense finished with seven shots, including five shots on goal, and six corner kicks.
