Kilpatrick's Two Free Throws Lifts Winthrop To A 50-49 Win Over Campbell

Eagles Overcome A 10-Point Third Quarter Deficit To Snap 10-Game Losing Streak

ROCK HILL, SC—Aliyah Kilpatrick converted two free throws with 8.6 seconds left in the game to give Winthrop a 50-49 Big South Conference victory over Campbell on Sunday afternoon.

The loss snapped a nine-game losing streak by the Eagles as they improve 3-15 overall and draw even with Campbell in the conference standings at 2-7.  The Camels' record slipped to 7-11.

Kilpatrick's free throws came after she was fouled trying to score inside the paint following a perfectly thrown sideline out-of-bounds lob pass by Erica Williams.  Winthrop had just fallen behind 49-48 two seconds earlier after Campbell's Jessica Pone made two free throws with 10 seconds left in the game.

Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook took advantage of the new women's rule this year that allows a team to advance the ball to front court in front of its own bench after calling a timeout in the final minute of play.  So, rather than having to take the ball the full length of the court to score, Winthrop ran a sideline play to set up Kilpatrick for a game-winning shot or a chance to get to the foul line.

Campbell still had two chances to win the game as it rushed the ball up court and got an open 3-point attempt by Makala Rouse and a last second tip-in attempt by Sarah Smith that fell off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

"Aliyah hit the two big free throws and we dodged two bullets at the end to get out of here today with a W, and I am just so happy," said Cook.  "Hopefully this victory will give us some momentum.  We have a long ride on Tuesday when we head up to Longwood on the day of the game, but if we bring this kind of energy and effort, I like our chances."

The outcome didn't look too promising for the Eagles after the first two quarters as they trailed 25-17 at intermission after making just 20 percent of their field goal attempts (7-35), but Winthrop had one of its best third quarter performances behind the play of Erica Williams

The junior, who came into the game as the Big South scoring leader with a 15.9 average, finished with 16 points to tie Kilpatrick for game scoring honors and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds.  She helped lead an 18-5 Winthrop run over the final 8:27 of the third quarter as the Eagles overcame a 29-19 deficit to lead 37-36 to close the period after Kilpatrick's steal and layup put Winthrop ahead 37-36.  Winthrop connected on 9 of 15 field goals in the third quarter as Williams accounted for five of those made shots.

Winthrop, which was playing its third straight game with only six scholarship players and seven total players dressed for the game, extended its lead to 47-42 with 3:09 left in the game on a follow shot by Ronata Rogers.  Campbell responded seconds later on a jumper by Pone to make it a 47-44 game.  Kilpatrick converted one of two free throws to make it a four-point game with just over two minutes left.  Rouse then drained a 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining to cut the lead to a single point and set up the hectic final 10 seconds that saw the lead change hands twice.

In addition to Williams and Kilpatrick, Naima Jackson reached double figures with 11 points. Campbell was led by Amanda Cofer, who had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.  She was the only Camel player to reach double figures.

Neither team blistered the nets by any means as Campbell shot 26.5 percent (18 of 68) and Winthrop was not much better at 29.4 percent (20 of 68).  The difference came on points in the paint and second chance points where Winthrop had a 43-26 advantage.

Winthrop will travel to Longwood on Tuesday for its second meeting of the season against the Lancers who defeated the Eagles 63-60 in Rock Hill on Jan. 2.
