FARMVILLE, VA—Despite its best shooting performance of the season, Winthrop's women dropped a 67-60 Big South Conference decision to Longwood on Tuesday night in Willett Hall.
The win gave the Lancers their first regular season sweep over Winthrop since they joined the Big South in 2012. The Eagles' record falls to 3-16 overall and 2-8 in the league and they remain winless in 13 games on the road. Longwood snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 6-14 and 3-8.
The Eagles shot 49 percent from the floor (25 for 51), but Longwood was able to overcome a 36 percent shooting effort (22-61) by knocking down 6 of 15 three-pointers and converting 17 of 22 free throws. Winthrop, meanwhile, was only 1 for 8 from behind the arc and made 9 of 12 free throws.
"The story tonight was Daeisha Brown," said Winthrop head coach
Kevin Cook. "She was eight for nine from the free throw line and hit every big shot. I tip my cap to her. Our scouting report was to make her go right, but we couldn't get the job done as she went left every time."
Winthrop led 14-9 after the first quarter as
Naima Jackson scored seven of her career-high 13 points in the first period. Longwood heated up from three land in the second quarter as four of their eight made field goals in the period came from behind the arc. But despite the outside shooting by the Lancers, Winthrop was able to knot the game at 32-32 going into the halftime break after
Aliyah Kilpatrick made a steal and layup in the closing seconds.
The game remained tied at 46-46 after three quarters as
Erica Williams and Jackson combined to score 12 of the team's 14 points. The Eagles led by as many as four at 40-36 with around six minutes left in the quarter following a layup by Williams.
Two free throws by Kilpatrick gave Winthrop the lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. A follow shot by Williams with 7:12 left in the game kept the Eagles on top by two and another layup by the conference's leading scorer tied the game at 54-54 with 5:02 remaining. That is when Brown took over. She was fouled on a drive to the basket and made both free throws to give Longwood the lead for good at 56-54. Her layup followed by a 10-foot jumper by Ebony Gilliam pushed the lead to 60-54 with 3:45 left and the Eagles had no answer.
Williams led all scorers in the game with 20 points while Kilpatrick finished with 14 to go along with 12 by
Naima Jackson. Brown led Longwood with 19.
Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday when it returns home to face Charleston Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the first game of a double header. The men's team will take on Radford at 4 p.m. for Back the Pack Day.
