Box Score GREENVILLE, SC-- Winthrop men's soccer broke its scoreless drought, but couldn't hold a 1-0 halftime lead as it fell 2-1 at Furman, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Diadora/Spinx Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament.
The Eagles drop their third straight game and are now 1-3 on the year as Furman improves to 1-1-1. Winthrop remains on the road for its next contest when it takes on 18
th-ranked Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.
Winthrop ended a scoring drought that was 256 minutes and 36 seconds before
Jordi Lluch netted his third of the season in the 23
rd minute. Lluch had two goals off his head in the season opener against Brevard College and once again used his head to find the back of the net. Winthrop had back-to-back corner kicks and the Eagles created the scoring chance off the second one. The initial corner didn't reach Lluch but eventually he found himself on the end of a pass from
Charles Coulson and headed the ball home.
Magnus Thorsson also assisted on the goal for his first of the season.
Through the first half and early on in the second half the Eagles defense had done a good job limiting Furman to just two shots but the Paladins caught a break in the 55
th minute when the Eagles were called for a handball in the box. The referee awarded a penalty kick as Kevin Pahl stepped in to take it and his shot hit the post but went right to Lewis Hawke as he put the rebound into the net to tie the game.
Furman snagged the lead in the 79
th minute when Marco Carrizales netted his first goal of the season as his shot found the left corner of the goal. Pahl and Hawke both assisted on the goal.
The Eagles finished the game with a number of good scoring chances as they finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots and had five shots on goal. Each team finished with five corners each.
Sophomore
Hector Fernandez was in goal for the second straight game and made two saves while his counterpart Sven Lissek finished with four saves.
Winthrop's Lluch and
Pietro Bottari were named to the All-Tournament Team. Â
