Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 To College Of Charleston Friday Afternoon

GREENVILLE, SC— For the second straight match Winthrop created several scoring chances but were unable to convert as it fell 1-0 to the College of Charleston, Friday afternoon in men's soccer action.

The Eagles fall to 1-2 on the year after outshooting the Cougars 14-11, including a 9-5 advantage in the second half. College of Charleston improves to 2-1 on the year. Winthrop will be in action on Sunday, Sept. 6 against Furman at 2:30 p.m.

In the second half applied a lot of offensive pressure, but the struggles to find the back of the net continued as it has now failed to score a goal in the last 234 minutes and 11 seconds of action. During that scoreless drought the Eagles have managed 41 shots with 20 of them on frame. The Eagles had nine shots in the second half and earned five corners (eight in the match).

In the 51st minute Magnus Thorsson tried to give the Eagles on the board first but was denied by Alex Young. In the 52nd minute the Cougars struck first when Jacob Nelson headed home a cross from Eli Dent at the back post for the only goal of the match.

The teams played a scoreless first half as College of Charleston had a 6-5 advantage in shots. Winthrop's Hector Fernandez, who made the start due to an injury to starter Fabian Broich, finished with five saves over the first 45 minutes as he was there every time the Cougars threatened. Fernandez finished the game with a career-high five saves. Young finished with six saves to earn the shutout against the Eagles.

Max Hasenstab nearly ended the Eagles scoring drought in the 82nd minute when his header hit the underside of the crossbar, but the ball bounced straight down and did not cross the goal line. He led the Eagles with five shots on the day, two of them on goal. The game was called with 2:45 left on the clock due to lightning in the area.
