ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team picked up a non-conference victory Tuesday night, taking down the Charlotte 49ers in straight sets.

Winthrop improved to 6-11 on the year with the victory while Charlotte fell to 5-9.

Winthrop trailed the majority of the opening set, but was able to take five of the final six points to win the first set 25-23.  After trailing briefly to start the second set, Winthrop built as much as a four-point edge.  The Eagles held the lead for the majority of the set and fought off a late Charlotte rally for the 25-23 victory.

The two squads were even through the first 20 points of the third set.  Winthrop then went on a 7-2 run, to take a 17-12 lead.  Charlotte battled back to take a 25-24 lead, but the Eagles were able to recover and grab the final three points, winning 27-25.

Nikki Drost led the Eagles with 21 kills and a .432 attack percentage while Lourdes Rosario also added 14 kills.  Madilyn McCarty finished with 50 assists while Carlie Skelton added 15 digs.

The Eagles will hit the road for their next five matches starting with a 7 p.m. contest against the Presbyterian Blue Hose Friday evening.
