Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC— Winthrop men's soccer fell 5-4 at USC Upstate, Wednesday evening at County University Soccer Stadium.
The Eagles fall to 1-5 after losing their fifth straight while the Spartans improve to 3-2 on the year. After losing five straight away from home the Eagles return to Eagle Field on Sept. 22 to try and end the losing streak against Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
Winthrop played a man up for the final 46 minutes and five seconds of the game but that didn't slow up the Upstate offense as it managed three second half goals.
The Eagles had a couple of chances to win the ball in the midfield before Michelangelo Dovidio played a through ball to Leon Schwarzer, who then chipped the ball over
Hector Fernandez as he came out to play the ball and it found the back of the net in the final minute of play.
There were several chances for the Eagles to add more than four goals as they outshot the Spartans 20-12 and had 11 corner kicks. Fernandez finished with four saves while Hassan Haddad finished with two.
Winthrop took a 4-2 lead when it scored two goals in just shy of three minutes early on in the second half.
Max Hasenstab put the Eagles in front 3-2 as he scored from about 10 yards out and then
Marco Gatzke, who assisted on the Hasenstab goal, put Winthrop ahead 4-2 in the 61
st minute.
Wild completed his hat trick in the 72
nd minute as he bent a free kick around the wall, beating Fernandez low to the left corner of the frame. Then in the 76
th minute Schwarzer found himself with a one-on-one with Fernandez from an angle and dribbled by him and calmly placed the ball into the net to tie the match at 4-4.
Just before the half the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in the 43
rd minute as senior defender
Jordi Lluch stepped up and converted the penalty for his second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Prior to the penalty James Campbell was shown his second yellow of the game that gave the Eagles a man advantage. That didn't seem to affect Gordon Wild as he netted his second of the game with 1:05 left in the half to even the score at 2-2.
Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Lluch scored his fifth goal of the season. After a corner kick sailed long, senior
Jordan Stoddart collected the ball and then placed a pass on the floor to Lluch straight on from goal around the spot as he struck it first time into the net.
It took the Spartans just over two minutes to tie the match when Wild scored the first of three on the night. Wild converted a free kick from about 25 yards out in the 8
th minute.
