Eagles Fall 3-0 To Wofford College Sunday Evening For First Loss

ROCK HILL, SC—Despite a 24-10 advantage in shots the Winthrop men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Wofford College, Sunday evening at Eagle Field.

The loss drops the Eagles to 1-1 on the year while the Terriers improve to 2-0. Winthrop will look to bounce back on Friday, Sept. 4 when it takes on College of Charleston at 5 p.m. in Greenville, SC on the campus of Furman University.

The Eagles had numerous opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but Wofford College goalkeeper Garrett Closs was relentless in net all night. Closs finished with 10 saves as the Eagles forced him to leave his feet for the majority of them.

In the 20th minute Marco Gatzke was all alone at the spot as a cross deflected right to him and his one-touch rip was saved by Closs and he smothered the rebound. It was just over a minute after that that Wofford converted its second scoring opportunity as Connor Davis headed home a free kick service from Will Puckett.

In the 24th minute Magnus Thorsson was denied by Closs as his free kick headed for the upper portion of the goal in the right corner was tipped away as Closs fully extended for the save. Two minutes later, Kyle Kennedy headed a cross toward goal that redirected toward the middle of the goal, but a Wofford defender was on the line and able to clear the ball away.

The Terriers were more aggressive out of the halftime break with a 1-0 lead as they nearly netted a couple in the early minutes. Fabian Broich came up with a big save on Nestor Jaramillo in the 47th minute.

Senior Jordan Stoddart was set up with a one-on-one at an angle in the 63rd minute but Closs denied him with another save. Less than two minutes later Wofford made it 2-0 when Matthew Aurednik was set up alone heading to goal by Jaramillo and slipped a shot by Broich. As the Eagles continued to pressure, Wofford picked up its third goal in the 87th minute on a counter as Aurednik was set up alone to goal again and beat Broich for his second of the night.

In addition to the big advantage in shots the Eagles had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Broich finished the game with three saves. Stoddart led the Eagles with four shots on goal while Thorsson had three.
