Baseball Earns Eighth Straight Big South Victory, Downs Presbyterian 16-9

ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team extended its conference winning streak to eight with a 16-9 victory over Presbyterian College on Friday night.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 33-16 and 11-8 in the conference while Presbyterian falls to 24-25 and 4-15 in the Big South.

Winthrop will be honoring its eight seniors on "Senior Day" before Saturday's 5:00 p.m. game.

Michael Green earned the win, moving to 2-0 and giving up two runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. Travis Shelley pitched the final two innings and held the Blue Hose to just three hits. Brian Kehner took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Winthrop combined for 18 hits, with Jace Whitley going 4-5 with three RBIs and one run scored.

The Blue Hose took a 1-0 in the top of the first after Tyler Weyenberg scored on a single through the left side by Jay Lizanich after singling and stealing second.

The Eagles loaded the bases to lead off the bottom of the first with three straight singles by Tyler Asbill, Brad Kaczka and Anthony Paulsen with Asbill tying it up on a walk by Mark Lowrie. John Menken hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kaczka. Babe Thomas then walked and all three runners were knocked home on a double to right center by Whitley. Whitley advanced to third on a wild pitch before crossing the plate on a double down the right field line by Mitch Spires to bring the score to 6-1.

Winthrop pushed the advantage to 8-1 in the second inning. Brad Kaczka led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple to right field by Mark Lowrie. Lowrie came home on Menken's second sacrifice fly of the night.

After Presbyterian got two runs back in the top of the third, the Eagles answered right back with three runs of their own. Kyle Edwards started off with a single and scored on a triple by Kaczka. Kazcka crossed the plate on a double by Lowrie before a single through the left side by Menken brought Lowrie home.
 
Presbyterian rallied to score four runs on five hits to make it 11-7 in the fourth inning.

The Blue Hose pulled within two with one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, including a home run to right field by Cam McRae.

The Eagles tacked on four more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Kaczka walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Paulsen reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that moved Kaczka to third. Lowrie singled through the left side to bring Kaczka home and advance Paulsen to second. Both runners advanced on a passed before Thomas knocked drove them both home on a single to right center. Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly by Spires after advancing to third on a single down the right field line by Whitley.

Paulsen scored the final run for the Eagles, coming home from second on a double down the right field line by Menken after back to back walks.
