Baseball Suffers 15-5 Loss At ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TN- After taking an early lead, the Winthrop baseball team suffered a 15-5 loss to ETSU on Wednesday night.

Winthrop drops to 32-16 while the Bucs improve to 19-29.

Zach Sightler took the loss, surrendering five runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning. Seven other Winthrop pitchers made appearances and allowed 10 runs on 18 hits. Lee Haeberle earned the win, allowing one run on five hits.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run over the left field fence by Anthony Paulsen.

ETSU responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jeremy Taylor walked and advanced to second on a throwing error by Sightler. Kevin Phillips was hit by a pitch before Trey York singled to score Taylor and move Phillips to third. Hagen Owenby walked as York advanced to third and Phillips came home on a passed ball. Jordan Sanford then singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by John Menken that allowed York to cross the plate. Aaron Maher drove home both runners on a single to center field.

Chris Cook made it 6-1 in the second, coming home on a single up the middle by York after singling and stealing second.

Sanford led off the bottom of the third inning with a homer down the left field line before Maher scored from third on a pass ball to bring the score to 8-1.

York hit the third home run of the game for the Bucs in the fourth inning.

Zach Thompson singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a double by Christian Bailey. Taylor loaded the base with a single before Thompson scored and both runners advanced on sacrifice fly by Cook. Bailey crossed the plate as Phillips reached on fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by Kyle Edwards.

ETSU tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tyler Asbill got one run back for the Eagles in the seventh inning, crossing the plate as Brad Kaczka grounded out after tripling.

The Eagles rallied to score three runs in the eighth inning on a home run to right center field by Babe Thomas. Mark Lowrie and John Menken led off the inning with back to back singles.

Winthrop returns home for a three-game conference series with Presbyterian beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
