Baseball Gets Shut Out 8-0 by Coastal Carolina in Big South Conference Tournament

BOILING SPRINGS, NC-The No.3 Winthrop baseball team suffered a 8-0 loss to No. 2 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles will face No. 6 Campbell in a re-match of Winthrop's opener at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in an elimination match.

Matt Crohan took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six runs on ten hits in five innings. Brock Hunter earned the win, holding the Eagles to three hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Anthony Paulsen went 1-4 and was the only Winthrop player to reach third.

The Chanticleers took a quick lead in the bottom of the first. Anthony Marks scored on a double by Connor Owings after singling and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Paez.
Billy Cooke put Coastal up by two in the second inning, coming home from second on a single to center field by Marks.

Coastal Carolina pushed the lead to six with four runs in the fifth inning. Michael Paez singled and moved to second on a walk by Owings. Paez stole third and scored on a throwing error by Roger Gonzalez that allowed Owings to go to second. Zach Remillard drove home Owings on a double to left field. Remillard got to third on a single by Casey Schroeder but Schroeder was thrown out trying to get to second and Remillard crossed the plate on a home run to center field by G.K. Young.

The Chants tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the six inning.

Head coach Tom Riginos is confident his team can rise to tomorrow's challenge. "We got to give Coastal Carolina and their pitcher." Riginos adds, "We just have to come back tomorrow with a positive attitude. We have an uphill battle but our guys have been fighting all year."
