Home Runs by Menken and Paulsen Launch Eagles to 26-7 Win Over Furman

Greenville, SC- Anthony Paulsen and John Menken belted two home runs each and drove home 13 runs to steer the Winthrop baseball team to a 26-7 win over Furman on Monday night.

The Eagles hit a season high 22 hits to improve to 21-12 on the year while the Paladins drop to 13-18.

Joey Strain earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in four innings. Four other Winthrop throwers made appearances, giving up six runs on five hits. Billy Greenfield took the loss for the Paladins, dropping to 0-4 this season while surrendering eight runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings.

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Paulsen's home run to centerfield scored himself and Mitch Spires who had singled.

Furman cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first after three straight singles scored Jake Jones.

Winthrop then exploded to score six runs in the second inning. With two outs, Kyle Edwards and Brad Kaczka both singled and were brought home on Paulsen's second home run, this time to right field. Roger Gonzalez walk followed by a double Menken and a walk by Babe Thomas to load the bases with all three runners scoring on a double to right field by Jace Whitley.

Menken and Thomas both crossed the plate in the top of the fourth inning to push the lead to 8-1.

Furman kept battling and score three runs in the fifth inning on back to back bases loaded singles by Jordan Simpson and Ryan Morse.

The Eagles batted around the sixth inning and scored eight runs. Menken led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a walk by Thomas. Whitley then singled to load the bases but Menken was thrown out at home as Clay Altman reached on fielder's choice. Edwards doubled down the left field line to score Whitley and Thomas and move Atlman to third before Altman crossed the plate on a single by Mitch Spires. Brad Kaczka walked to reload the bases and Edwards came home as Paulsen grounded out. Gonzalez then walked before Menken hit a grand slam to right field to clear the bases and bring the score to 18-4.

Winthrop took advantage of two Furman errors to tack on six more runs on three hits in the seventh inning.

With one out in the ninth, Menken hit a solo home run over the right field fence before Whitley scored from third on a single by Edwards.

Furman chipped away at the lead, scoring one run in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings but could not pull off the come from behind win.

The Eagles have less than 24 hours to recover as they travel to Greensboro on Wednesday to take on North Carolina A&T at 6:00 p.m.
