Box Score www.winthropphotos.comBox ScoreROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team saw its 10-game winning streak snapped Tuesday evening as the Eagles were blanked 12-0 by Furman at The Winthrop Ballpark.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 32-15 while the Paladins improve to 20-24.
Freshman pitcher
Freddie Sultan took his first loss of the year as he allowed four runs on three hits in two innings. Matthew Quarles improved to 5-1 on the year as he held the Eagles to just three hits in six innings.
The Eagles, who entered the game hitting .297 as a team, were held to just four total hits by
Brad Kaczka,
Mark Lowrie,
Babe Thomas and
Kyle Edwards.
The Paladins took a 1-0 lead in the first as Carter Grote hit a lead-off home run to left field, his first of two long balls in the game.
Furman pushed the advantage to 4-0 with three runs coming home on Grote's second homer, a three-run shot to left. Blake Chisolm led off the inning reaching on a throwing error by Sultan followed by a walk by Cameron Whitehead.
Grote made it 5-0 scoring on a single up the middle by Griffin Davis after reaching on fielder's choice and advancing on a single by Sims Griffith.
The Paladins jumped out to a 9-0 lead with four runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Simpson led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Chisolm. Whitehead singled to bring Simpson home before Brandon Elmy hit a three-run home run to left field.
Chris Ohmstede's three-run homer, the third of the game for the Paladins, in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 12-0.
The Eagles will now take a seven day break before traveling to ETSU next Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. game.
