Baseball Sweeps Double Header with Charleston Southern on Sunday

CHARLESTON, SC- The Winthrop baseball team completed a series and double header sweep of conference foe Charleston Southern on Sunday, defeating the Bucs 3-1 and 4-1.

The Eagles continue a winning streak that improves to ten games while moving to 32-14 on the year and 10-8 in conference play. The Bucs drop to 20-22 overall and 9-9 in the Big South.

Senior Chad Smith went 3-5 on the day with an RBI and one run scored.

Matt Crohan earned his fourth conference win, pitching 8 2/3 innings and allowing one run on eight hits. Travis Shelley gets his third save of the year, getting the final out of the game. Evan Raynor took the loss, surrendering two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

After being held to five and a half scoreless innings, CSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nate Blanchard led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt Sam Remick before coming home on a single up the middle by Bryan Dye.

The Eagles took the lead with two runs in the seventh inning. With two outs, Jace Whitley singled and advanced to third on a single by Chad Smith. Kyle Edwards walked to load the bases and Whitley scored as Tyler Asbill reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Smith then crossed the plate on a walk by Brad Kaczka.

Whitley tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Kaczka after reaching and advancing to second on an error by the shortstop and moving to third as Sullivan reached on an error by the pitcher.

Josh Strong earned the win, getting the second complete game of his career and first the season while allowing one run on eight hits. Dylan Lee took the loss for CSU, giving up two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Eagles took a 1-0 in the second inning on a single to center field by Smith scored Thomas. Thomas walked and advanced to second as Whitley was hit by a pitch.

CSU tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning with Blanchard crossing the plate on a bases loaded groundout by Chase Shelton.

Winthrop exploded to a three- run seventh inning. Whitley led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith. Runners were on the corners after Edwards singled to right field, and Whitley came home on a single by Asbill. Asbill and Edwards advanced on the throw home and both runners scored on as Kaczka reached on an error by the shortstop.

The Eagles host Furman on Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to ETSU on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. game.
