ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will look to extend its winning streak Sunday afternoon when the Eagles host St. Francis at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field.
Winthrop enters the weekend with a 3-1 record after picking up victories over George Mason and Michigan last week. This is the Eagles' fourth straight home contest of six in a row. St. Francis is 0-1 on the season after falling to Bucknell earlier this week.
The Eagles had another strong showing in the Big South weekly awards as senior Jenna Kasmarik earned her second Attacking Player of the Week award and freshman goalie Alaina Girani was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.
Kasmarik leads Winthrop and the Big South with 14 goals this season. Junior Shannon Gallagher is second on the team with 10 goals and has also tallied three assists.
Freshman Katherine Judge leads Winthrop and is tied for the conference lead in ground balls, averaging four per game. Girani is averaging just shy of 10 saves per game which is third in the Big South.
St. Francis fell to Bucknell 13-10 on the road Wednesday. Junior Rebecca Meyer led the Red Flash with five goals in the loss while junior Christina Fini notched three points on two goals and one assist. Sophomore goalie Heather McKee finished with 10 saves.
The Red Flash lost their top three scorers from last season. Junior Katie Schaaf is the top returning scorer, totaling 14 goals last season. St. Francis finished last season at 4-12, falling to Winthrop 19-10 in early March. The two teams also met in 2013 with the Eagles coming out victorious 13-9.
Winthrop closes out its six-match home stretch next weekend, hosting Vermont on Saturday, March 7 and Bucknell Monday, March 9.
