ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team collected 10 hits, including a three-run home run by Babe Thomas to down Jacksonville 9-1 in the second game of its three game weekend series.
The Eagles are now 5-3 on the year while the Dolphins drop to 5-5.
Junior right hander Zach Sightler hurled 8.2 inning and held the Dolphins to just one run on eight hits for his second win of the year. JU starter Justin Russell, took the loss as he gave up all nine runs and all 10 hits.
Winthrop scored three times in each of the first two innings. In the first frame, Anthony Paulsen doubled to left after Thomas had reached base on a fielder's choice. Mark Lowrie's single scored Thomas. John Menken then reached on a throwing error allowing Paulsen to score. Menken scored the third run on a ground out to second by Brad Kaczka.
Thomas made it a 6-0 game in the second with his rocket over the right field wall that scored Kyle Edwards and Tyler Asbill, who reached on base hits.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the fourth with the help of two Dolphin errors. Thomas drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Paulsen. Lowrie reached on an error by allowing Thomas to score his third run. Paulsen advanced to third and then scored on a grounder by Kaczka.
Winthrop went up 9-0 in the sixth inning when Thomas singled, stole second and scored on a single to center by Lowrie.
Jacksonville scored its run in the top of the ninth inning when Dylan Dillard ruined Sightler's shutout bid with a sole home run.
Winthrop concludes its weekend series on Sunday with the game time being moved to 2:00 p.m. because of the forecast of freezing rain during the early morning.
