ROCK HILL, SC—Senior center back
Jordi Lluch scored two goals to help lead Winthrop to a 4-1 victory over Campbell, Saturday afternoon in Big South men's soccer action at Eagle Field.
With the victory the Eagles improve to 8-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Big South as they clinch a Top 4 finish in the Big South. Campbell falls to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the league and still has a shot to claim a Top 4 seed. Winthrop will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it travels to Longwood for a noon kickoff.
Prior to the game there was a ceremony to recognize the nine Winthrop seniors as well as a ceremony for head coach
Rich Posipanko, who coached in his last regular season home game. The win was the 389
th of Posipanko's 37-year career.
Lluch continued his hot streak for the week as he netted two second half goals to secure the win after scoring a goal and assisting on the other against Coastal Carolina this past Wednesday. He now has 10 goals on the season, which leads the team. His first came in the 48
th minute on a header off a junior
Max Hasenstab corner kick. Then he added another in the 78
th minute when he ripped a shot into the right corner of the goal from the edge of the box.
The first five minutes of the game saw three goals as the Eagles struck first in the 4
th minute. Senior
Jordan Stoddart headed in a corner kick by
Patrick Barnes at the near post. Campbell tied the game 34 seconds later on a corner kick when Matt Martinez headed in a Josh Signey service. Winthrop responded 26 seconds later when Stoddart cross the ball to the back post and Hasenstab headed the ball into the lower left corner for his ninth of the season and second game-winning goal.
Winthrop had a 19-12 advantage in shots and corner kicks were even at seven apiece.
Fabian Broich made six saves to earn the win in goal as he improved to 8-2-1. Jeff Kennedy finished with four saves for Campbell.
