Eagles Clinch Share Of Big South Regular Season Title With Win At Longwood

Winthrop Earns The Top Seed For The Big South Tournament Which Starts Tuesday, Nov. 10

FARMVILLE, VA—Winthrop men's soccer clinched a share of the Big South Conference regular season championship with a 1-0 victory at Longwood, Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles finish the regular season 9-6-1 overall and tie for first place with Radford at 7-1-1 in the Big South. By virtue of a tie-breaker the Eagles earn the top seed for the Big South Conference Tournament that begins Tuesday, Nov. 10.

After a scoreless first half the Eagles broke through in the 52nd minute for the only goal of the match as Jordan Stoddart dribbled into the box and as he approached the goalkeeper one-on-one he slipped a shot into the lower left corner for his fourth of the season.

Longwood's best opportunity for a goal on the afternoon came in the 27th minute. After misplaying a ball out of the back, Winthrop goalkeeper Fabian Broich was caught out of position. As Longwood (9-8-1, 4-4-1) moved the ball around for a shot Broich worked his way back toward the goal mouth. Longwood's Zach Crandall had a rip from around the spot and Broich made a diving save. The rebound came right back to Crandall and he ripped another shot but was turned away by Broich again. The save came out toward the top of the box and Will Lambert cracked one toward the middle of the frame as it hit the crossbar and the Eagles cleared.

As the Eagles were looking for an insurance goal sophomore Charles Coulson and Stoddart each had good looks inside the box. Coulson had a free ball bounce out to him near the spot in the 61st minute and hit a solid shot toward the frame that was deflected off a defender and just wide of the post. Stoddart had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper from practically the same spot hit scored but his shot slipped wide of the post as well.

Winthrop finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots as Broich finished with two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year. Longwood's Carl Carpenter also finished with two saves.

Winthrop's opponent for Tuesday's quarterfinal game won't be decided until the conclusion of the Campbell at UNC Asheville game scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night. The Eagles will host the quarterfinal on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.

It was a homecoming for Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko as he coached his final regular season game on the field where his successful collegiate career began. He will end his coaching career as the all-time leader in wins for the Big South Conference, Winthrop and Longwood.
