Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 To 9th-Ranked Coastal Carolina Wednesday Night

Lluch Nets 8th Goal Of The Year, Tied For Team Lead With Hasenstab

CHARLOTTE, NC— Winthrop men's soccer unbeaten streak came to an end at seven games after a 3-2 loss to ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina, Wednesday evening at Marion Diehl Park.

The Eagles fall to 7-6-1 overall and suffer their first league loss to fall to 5-1-1. Coastal improves to 12-1-1 overall and is 6-1 in the Big South. The Eagles end their home schedule this Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. against Campbell. It will mark the final regular season home game for head coach Rich Posipanko.

Winthrop grabbed the lead in the 2nd minute when Jordi Lluch converted a penalty kick for his eighth goal of the season. The Chanticleers tied the game in the 15th minute when Amar Geirsson was set free in the box by a flick on by Tobenna Uzo and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Fabian Broich as he came out to close the angle.

Coastal grabbed the lead before half on a Martin Melchor goal when he scored from about 10 yards out. Ryan Willoughby served a ball to the far post and Uzo headed back across the goal mouth right to Melchor. The Chanticleers took a 3-1 lead when Uzo scored his fifth goal of the year in the 58th minute. Melchor served a ball into the box and Broich dove to knock it away but Uzo ran on and struck it first time into the back of the net.

The Eagles didn't give up as they got back into the game with a Charles Coulson goal in the 78th minute. Andrew Raad served a ball to the far post and Lluch crossed it back in as Coulson struck it from the spot into the lower left corner.

Coastal Carolina ended up with an 11-10 advantage in shots as Fernando Pina finished with three saves for the Chanticleers. Broich finished the game with three saves as well and suffers just his second loss in goal this season.
