ROCK HILL, SC—The Lady Eagles' soccer team got back on the winning track when they defeated the Campbell Fighting Camels 1-0 on Saturday to give the home team a victory on Senior Day. Five four-year members of the Winthrop squad were honored before the match:
Taylor Walton,
Taylor Coleman,
Megan David,
Jessica Logan, and Irmani Ervins.
Winthrop had their best chance to take the lead in the first half within the first minute of the match. The Eagles'
JoJo Taylor fired a shot on goal but was denied by the post, Irmani Evins came up with the rebound and sent it back towards goal but Campbell's goalkeeper Samantha Lawson was there to make the save.
The two teams battled for possession and momentum throughout the first half. Neither team could seem to find the right touch in the final third. The half ended a stalemate at 0-0 with both teams having five shots with one on target.
Both teams came out of the locker rooms very aggressive in the second half. Winthrop forced Lawson to another save when Taylor drilled another towards goal in the 55
th minute. Campbell responded with a flurry of five shots in 10 minutes, all of which were off target. The Camels nearly took the lead when Murita Storey was denied by the post in the 73
rd minute.
In the 75
th minute the Lady Eagles'
Olivia Costello crossed a ball into the box to
Samantha Prytulak who found
Emily Crick and she finished the job, sending one past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Winthrop's defense held up strong for the remaining 15 minutes to give them the 1-0 shutout.
Winthrop, 5-7-2 (2-4-1 BSC), will next take the pitch when they host the Liberty Flames next Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Eagle Field. Starting time for the match is 6:00 pm.
