ROCK HILL, SC—Max Hasenstab scored two second half goals including the golden goal in the 93
rd minute to lift Winthrop to a 3-2 win over UNC Asheville, Saturday night in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
The win is the fifth straight for the Eagles as they improve to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the Big South. Asheville falls to 4-6-1 overall and 1-4 in the league. Winthrop will look for six straight when it hosts Presbyterian College on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.
"I thought it was a good comeback and felt we played extremely well in the last 20 minutes and overtime," said Winthrop head coach
Rich Posipanko. "You have to give a lot of credit to Asheville and I feel that was one of the best Asheville teams I've seen in some time."
After the Eagles rallied from two goals down to force overtime, Hasenstab found the back of the net for the second time of the day just minutes into the first overtime period.
Patrick Barnes served a ball into the box as Hasenstab looked like he was going to try a bicycle kick but pulled off and jumped up for the ball with an Asheville defender. The ball popped up, Hasenstab was first to the ball as two Asheville defenders closed in when he flicked the ball back over his head, took a touch off his thigh turning back toward the middle of the field and then fired a quick shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
Hasenstab did not play in the first half but started the second and made a big impact on the Eagles offense. He netted his first goal of the game in the 67
th minute as
Nil Vinyals set Hasenstab free in the box and as slotted the ball into the far corner to pull the Eagles within a goal at 2-1. Winthrop tied the match in the 77
th minute when
Jordan Stoddart netted his first goal of the season. C.J. miller dribbled the ball down the left side and then slipped a cross on the ground in front of the goal and Stoddart was there to redirect the ball into the net.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead just before halftime when Zach Joens ripped a free kick from about 35 yards out that beat Winthrop goalkeeper
Fabian Broich high as the ball bounced off the crossbar and crossed over the goal line before being knocked away. Joe Lacasto gave Asheville a 2-0 lead 46 seconds into the second half as the ball bounced around as the teams scrambled in front of the goal and it popped out to Lacasto who smashed it home for the two goal lead.
Winthrop finished the game with a 22-12 advantage in shots as Broich finished the game with five saves while Zak Davis finished with six saves.
