HIGH POINT, NC – The Winthrop volleyball team dropped a four-set match Friday evening on the road to the High Point Panthers.
Winthrop's record fell to 8-13 overall and 3-3 in the conference with the loss while High Point improved to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in the Big South.
Lourdes Rosario led the Eagles with 14 kills and 10 digs while Emma Weakland added 10 kills. Maidlyn McCarty finished with 39 assists while Mallary McFadden led the team with 13 digs.
The two teams battled back and forth in the opening set, with High Point leading early and Winthrop coming on with a late charge for the 26-24 victory. The second set was again back and forth with four lead changes and nine tied scores, but High Point was able to close the set on a 5-2 run, winning 25-22.
High Point led early in the third set only to see Winthrop come on strong late. The Eagles trailed 24-20, but went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 24-24, but couldn't continue the momentum as the Panthers took the final two points to win 26-24. High Point dominated the fourth set, not allowing the Eagles any chance at extending the match, winning 25-13.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they head to Buises Creek, NC to take on the Campbell Camels.
