Winthrop Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match To Campbell Saturday Afternoon

BUISES CREEK, NC – The Winthrop volleyball team dropped a five-set match Saturday afternoon on the road to the Campbell Camels in Big South action.

The Eagles fell to 8-14 overall and 3-4 in the conference while Campbell improved to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in the Big South.

Winthrop led early in the first set 10-6 before Campbell went on a13-1 run, taking a 19-11 lead.  The Camels took the first set 25-15.  The two sides were close in the early going of the second set but the Eagles were able to use an 8-3 run to take a 20-13 and took the second set 25-17.

The Eagles led early in the third set only to see the Camels come back to take the lead midway in the set.  Campbell led 17-14 before Winthrop went on an 8-0 run, taking a 22-17 lead, winning the third set 25-19.  The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle with both sides taking turns leading.  The Camels led late 24-22, before Winthrop took the next two points but couldn't keep the momentum going, as Campbell took the final two, winning 26-24.

Campbell led early in the fifth set and saw Winthrop rally to take a 12-10 advantage.  The Camels responded taking the final five points of the set to win 15-10.

Brianna Gray led three Eagles with double digit kills, totaling 12.  Nikki Drost recorded a double-double, recording 11 kills and 17 digs while Emma Weakland also added 11 kills.  Madilyn McCarty finished with 41 assists and Maria Volstad led the team with 24 digs.

Winthrop returns home for the first time in nearly a month next weekend when the Eagles host Radford on Friday and Liberty on Saturday.
