WILMINGTON, NC—
Winthrop men's soccer jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 victory at UNC Wilmington, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UNCW Courtyard Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach Classic.

The victory is improves the Eagles to 3-1 on the season while UNCW is now 2-1-1 on the year.

The first 23 minutes of the game favored UNCW pretty heavily as it put a lot of pressure on the Eagles defense with three shots and four corners (all of which came in the first 16:07). But Winthrop's first scoring opportunity was converted by junior Magnus Thorsson as he found the back of the net after a scramble in front of the net in the 24th minute.

Just minutes later after withstanding three consecutive shots by UNCW, two of which were blocked after a Guilherme Avelar save, Winthrop countered and Pol Sole netted his second goal of the season in the 27th minute. Sole nearly added his second of the game as he hit the post in the 47th minute.

Just before the half, Winthrop slipped up defensively allowing a quick give-and-go into the box that set up Kellen Foster for his first goal of the season. He played a ball to Dnaiel Escobar, who then played it right back and Foster placed the ball into the net in the 44th minute. The goal was shorthanded as UNCW was forced to play with 10-men after a player was shown a red card in the 28th minute.

Winthrop's Fabian Broich started the game in goal but was forced to leave the game with an injury following a save in the 14th minute. Broich was replaced by Avelar for his first action this season.

Avelar earned the win in net as he came off the bench to make three saves while his counterpart Sean Melvin made one save. The Seahawks finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and had six corners to Winthrop's two.

Sole, Thorsson and C.J. Miller were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13 as it will face 16th-ranked Charlotte in its home opener at 6 p.m. It will mark the first of six straight home matches for the Eagles.
