WILMINGTON, NC— Winthrop men's soccer suffered its first loss of the season as it fell 1-0 to Elon, Friday afternoon in the opening game of the UNCW Courtyard Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach Classic.
Winthrop falls to 2-1 on the season and will wrap-up play this weekend on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against UNC Wilmington. Elon improves to 2-1 on the year.
Elon was awarded a penalty kick in the ninth minute after
Josh Choice was whistled for a foul inside the box. James Brace stepped up and converted the penalty for the only goal of the match.
"I'm pleased with the work rate and guys continue to work hard," said Winthrop head coach
Rich Posipanko. "I'm disappointed in our inability to create something off of 14 corners. We need to have some guys toughen up and get back on the field. I'm also pleased with our defense as its getting better. Fortunately we haven't given up a goal in the run of play as both have been on penalties."
Winthrop finished the game with 11 shots and 14 corner kicks but Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean was forced to make just one save as he recorded his second straight shutout. His lone save of the game came in the 84
th minute on a
Charles Coulson shot. Winthrop's
Fabian Broich faced 11 shots by the Phoenix and tied his career-best of seven saves.
