Eagles Are Looking For Third Straight Win

ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's soccer team will play its second game in three days when it hosts East Tennessee State, Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field.

Winthrop improved to 5-2 on the year with a 5-0 victory over Brevard College Sunday evening. The Eagles now have 10 goals in their last two games with eight different goal scorers. ETSU enters the game with a 4-2 mark and coming off a 2-1 overtime victory at home against South Carolina. The Buccaneers also have two quality road wins at William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth.

Since falling 3-0 to Charlotte in which the Eagles had opportunities to put the ball in the net, Winthrop has 10 goals in its last two games and has moved up to 12th nationally in scoring at 2.29 goals per game. Junior Jordan Stoddart leads the team with four goals and is third nationally in game-winning goals with three. His total of four goals is tied for 27th nationally with several players but having only played five of the team's seven game he is just shy of the 75 percent needed to qualify nationally for goals per game.

Senior Pol Sole and freshman Charles Coulson each have three goals while the team's leader in assists is junior center back Jordi Lluch.

Goalies Fabian Broich and Guilherme Avelar both remain out and the Eagles will once again be down to their third goalie Hector Fernandez, who is 2-0 since being forced into action against USC Upstate.

Recording their second shutout of the season on Sunday, the Eagles' goals against average dropped to 1.29.

The Buccaneers, who have also won two straight, are led by redshirt sophomore Joao Ramalho, who has five goals and an assist on the year for 11 points. Ramalho is tied for 10th nationally in total goals and 11th nationally in scoring. He is the only multiple goal scorer as three of the other four goal scorers on the team have tallied game-winning goals.

Redshirt freshman Daniel Adelman has played every second in goal for ETSU as he is 4-2 with a 1.33 goals against average.

This will be the fourth meeting between Winthrop and ETSU as the series is tied 1-1-1. ETSU started its program in 2008 and the Eagles have been scheduled to play them each season since 2010 with 2011's game getting rained out. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in last year's meeting and each team's win in the series as come on its home field.
