ROCK HILL, SC
- Junior Megan David's goal in the 7th minute lifted the Winthrop women's soccer team past South Carolina State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field. With the win the Lady Eagles improve to 3-3 while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 1-9.

David's goal came after Krystyna Freda's opportunity was broken up by the Lady Bulldogs' defense but was cleared right to David who took one touch and rocketed her shot past goalkeeper Haley Austin from 18 yards out.

The Lady Eagles continued to dominate play, outshooting South Carolina State 25-5 but could not put another one away as Austin collected 12 saves. Winthrop thought they broke through in the 79th minute when Freda tapped in a ball after Haley couldn't hang onto a shot from Olivia Costello but it was called back as a foul was called on Winthrop.

Freda led the team in shots with nine, followed by David who tallied four. Dominique Brown earned three of the Lady Bulldogs' five shots.
Amelia Henderson got her first win and shutout of the year, making one save.

"We played with a lot of energy and passion," said head coach Spencer Smith. "I felt like the first half we started off strong and created a lot of opportunities which the goalie had to make some saves on and ie was a good performance to build on."

Winthrop will begin its conference action on Wednesday as it hosts Gardner-Webb at 6:00 p.m. at Eagle Field.
